Fat bombs are the darling of the Ketogenic diet world - imagine being able to consume rich, delicious and even sweet hunks of melt in your mouth fat and have it be on your plan! Nirvana, yes? This post explores a bit of what is great and not so great about fat bombs - and then a recipe for my latest creation....a word of warning - they are good, maybe even a bit too good. Just proceed with caution.
As a I wrote in a recent Instagram Post featuring an earlier version of these I definitely have mixed feelings about Fat Bombs. On the one hand, they can be the perfect way to up your fat intake with good healthy fats, plus they can be just what you need when you have a craving for something sweet and delicious. However, they are also easy to over consume in which case they can throw you right off plan - they may not throw you out of Ketosis but at a certain point, excess energy (aka calories) will need to get stored. If your goal is to get leaner this is obviously not ideal.
The first thing to consider is this: when you eat a Fat Bomb are you satiated or does this awaken the beast within you that has been slumbering since the last time you had something sweet. If you are satisfied then this is a great strategy for you but if you are in the latter group then this may simply be a recipe for disaster....know thyself. If the mere existence of these in your fridge is going to drive you to distraction till every one is gone this may be one of those recipes that's just not for you or...make it for a crowd, then you get your one or two and the rest are gone - everybody wins. It's all good.
The second thing to consider (and this also has to do with whether these are your secret weapon or your kryptonite) is taking the time to enjoy and register that you are eating this deliciou,s rich, energy dense food. Those of us who eat while reading, working, emailing or running out the door have all had those times when we were pretty sure we had (fill in the blank) in our hand to eat a few minutes ago...where did I put it down? Oh no wait, I ate it?? Really?? Oh, yeah, I can sort of taste it. But I don't remember....surely I can have a do over???
This brings us to the issue of mindful eating. Without beating this horse to death - let's just say that especially when it comes to this type of item it's worth using the excuse to take even a brief break in the action, sit yourself down.....nibble on it, or if you need to pop the whole thing in your mouth then at least savour it and enjoy it. And hey, if you're active or looking for extra fuel you may be able to have two no problem...just be aware.
